A Livestrong Christmas

While I was happily snuggled up with my dog enjoying sleeping in on the holiday weekend, I decided to check Facebook.

It was an early Christmas gift.

There on my profile page was a "tagged" photo --- a LIVESTRONG badge, hanging from a Christmas tree...all with love from the LIVESTRONG Leader and fellow friends in San Jose, CA.

They celebrated Christmas in the park, LIVESTRONG-style. To be honest, the idea, well, rocks. This time of year, I am so thankful to my friends and family...and also to my health (cancer free!)...which allows me to enjoy spending time with all of them.

"Unity is strength" is one of the LIVESTRONG mottos -- and I think it's very true. Today, I felt the solidarity from my pals in San Jose, and they reminded me what this season is all about for me.

Helplessness. There is no worse feeling than that. How well I remember those moments when I sat talking on a phone in a country across the world, hearing my sister say those hateful words, “Angie, I have cancer.” Emotions flooded though my veins---anger, sadness, more anger, and fear—but the worse feeling was helplessness. What could I do for her? I didn’t even live in the country where she lived!

Julie’s battle was long and all chronicled here throughout this Cures Rock! blog. I don’t need to dig through piles of stories to tell you the hell that journey can be. Yet in the midst of this journey also rose feelings that I thought odd and misplaced in this new world. Words like hope, perseverance, and humor became familiar to my vocabulary, and I knew that through prayers, kindness, letters, and roll-up-your-sleeves hard work, that there were indeed things that I could do as a family member watching a loved one battle cancer.

Even though I cheer at the thought that my twin has been cancer free for over two years, this battle won’t be over anytime soon for my family. I have other family members and children and friends that I want to make sure never journey down the road that my sister did. This is where committing my time to great organizations comes in to play. Recently, my daughter and I ran together at the Yellow Hat Run benefitting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Next week, I’ll head down to San Diego to volunteer at the Swing Fore! Yellow golf tournament benefitting the Lance Armstrong Foundation. Thanks to a simple request at work and a very generous company I work for, my company is also one of the sponsors of the event. (Thank you Preferred Hotel Group and Preferred Golf!) In February, the Cures Rock! running team will join the Surf City Marathon and Half Marathon race in Huntington Beach, and join Team Livestrong at the Livestrong Austin Marathon and Half Marathon, to continue to raise funds that go toward finding a cure.

Helpless? I don’t think so. It’s all perspective. Perhaps I won’t be the one in the lab finding the cure, but I might just be the one that raised that final dollar needed to fund the research that found the cure.

Tomorrow, Sunday 10/2, is LIVESTRONG Day! Join us for San Diego's celebration for the Wear Yellow Art & Pet Stroll in Del Mar!

This is our 3rd annual, San Diego LIVESTRONG Day "Wear Yellow Walk"....with a twist this year!

We're joining up with the Del Mar "Taste, Art & Pet Stroll" for LIVESTRONG Day! Wear yellow to raise awareness and stroll through the gorgeous Del Mar Village!

Check in at the Del Mar Association booth, and yellow LIVESTRONG bandanas will be handed out to your pups (until supplies last).

** Some of us will be headed there around 12:30pm-1pm ish, so we hope to see some yellow around that time!!***

It's an informal meet-up of family and friends, where we all come together, wear yellow and stroll to raise awareness in our SD community.

The event includes a FREE art & pet stroll, and a TICKETED restaurant taste.

50/50. Beat the Odds.

There is a little kick to my step this morning. Tonight, I'm heading to the screening of Summit Entertainment's movie, 50/50...along with other local San Diegans for LIVESTRONG volunteers, AYA survivors and representatives from the Emilio Nares Foundation (recipient of the Community Impact Project Award from LIVESTRONG).

It's true. I've already screened this movie once. It was amazing. Wait, that didn't seem to get my point across. It was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. There. That's better. It is a serious movie and seriously funny, and one of the best movies I have seen all year (I'd say THE best, but I am a Harry Potter fan, so that's a little hard for me to say....). This is a story about a young adult cancer patient, his family, friends and therapist --- all wrapped up and put into a movie by the same folks that brought us the movie Superbad.

And you know what? They got it right. I'm serious, and I consider myself an expert on the topic as a cancer survivor! When I was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 31, a friend brought over a bunch of Julia Robert movies to help cheer me up. Nothing like total indulgent in movies to zone out from the suffering of chemotherapy. That is until I came across the movie, "Dying Young." (Seriously, a note to all of you that read this blog: Never EVER give your friend who has cancer the movie "Dying Young" to watch while they are sick.) And, being in a "pity me" mood, I watched it. Oh yeah, I was that smart. Now don't get me wrong, it's a great flick. But it's just sad, sad...and then sad.)

50/50 captures what so many other "Big C" movies don't: the experience of facing it as a young adult, the effect on friendships and family, the importance of trying to get mental health therapy support (although, um, I'd recommend a more seasoned one in real life), the freakouts, the humor, the not wanting to tell people, the wanting to tell people, the dating, the sex, the humor and the resilience.

I spent most the movie laughing so hard I almost fell out of my chair, and at the same time, I was trying to be sneaky and wipe away my tears without the person next to me seeing me (until I saw that the whole movie row was crying and laughing, too). I found myself nodding because I, too, am a young adult cancer survivor, and I remember those same experiences. I remember shaving my head, not wanting to tell my family, struggling with a relationship and trying to express all this in words to others.

So, I am looking forward to tonight. It'll be special because Summit Entertainment has been awesome enough to partner with LIVESTRONG and allow us to have a table at tonight's screening to share about the LIVESTRONG and other local cancer services here in San Diego. I'm a little nervous about addressing a theatre packed full of people, but I figure they won't walk out on me because, hey, they all want to watch a movie, right? Ha ha. I'm kidding. I bet most of the audience has been affected in some way by this disease, and I believe this movie intelligently and with tons of humor captures the experience in a very entertaining way that is definitely worth seeing on the big screen (don't wait for DVD folks...you'll want to see this one in the theatres, trust me).

Clavicle Smash-vicle

I've received a few emails asking why I haven't been blogging lately, and the truth is that I was a one-armed bandit there for a week or so. I fell and broke my collarbone last week...a "Z deformity with 4 fragments." I don't recommend falling and hitting the ground onto one's shoulder/neck to anyone. Because let me tell you --- breaking a clavicle hurts like crazy and the doctors don't set the bones (real fun...and by "fun", I mean "not fun"). I didn't realize how much that little bone actually did until it stopped functioning, and I now hold a new appreciation for it.

In my short tenure as a fractured clavicle patient, I have learned a few things through my orthopedic doctors, which I thought I'd share with all of you.

Symptoms :
The first and more obvious symptom to look for is a fall --- and if you fell directly on the shoulder (and if you did, you should worry about your clavicle). If you're worried about your clavicle and you have not sustained any type of fall, then you probably don't have a a break, you are a hypochondriac. :) And, of course, the other obvious symptoms like pain, swelling, a bump on the clavicle, and inability to move the arm on the side of the break.

Please note: Since I realize many of my friends and readers of this blog are triathletes and cyclists (and hence, at risk for this injury), the first thing you should remember when you think someone has broken their collarbone is that the range of motion test IS A BAD IDEA. Seriously. I had a few folks tell me that my shoulder had popped out of the socket, and I just needed to snap it back into place, whip my arm to pop it...you get my point. I mean, even if someone could move their arm 360 degrees, they could have a break....and in all my screaming pain and spasming muscles, my body was doing all sorts of new angles it hadn't tried before. Just leave the poor soul alone in their misery, and get them to an ER.

Docs & ER:

Let me recommend that it's best to head on out to the emergency center for X-rays. The best part was that when I broke mine, I wasn't with my normal crowd of friends, so a perfect stranger (i.e. good Samaritan) drove me to the E.R. and stayed there until I could get home safely. (My hope in the kindness of strangers has been renewed!). And, if the x-rays look anything like the ones pictured here (mine), you don't really need a doctor to tell you what's wrong. Seriously, I think to myself, "How on earth did that happen?!?

The orthopedic doctor gave me a clavicle brace (see pictured) which helps to keep the fracture immobile and straight. This has to be worn for 4-6 weeks depending on the doctor -- and despite the cute smile on the model's face, this is *not* a comfortable brace. It has to be tightened throughout the day and is impossible to put on by yourself. (So, for those that live on your own -- it's time to meet your neighbors.) I mean, a brace that ties in the back? Sounds like a straight-jacket to me. ;) Yes, it's worn all day and night, even when sleeping. If you think it's fun to be up on a coat hanger...well, this is fun. Otherwise, this is torture. I can't really tell you when for sure this brace gets to be removed, as I'm still in the beginning stage of my journey with this injury. But, when you do take it off, hopefully you'll do something fun with it...like burn it. Afterwards through the rest of the healing process, if one is even slightly intelligent, hopefully one will pay attention to the consequences of "high risk behaviors or sport" and "generally stupid ideas." Whatever category you fall into.

I was asked several times at the ER if I did this on accident. Huh? I mean, seriously? Why would I do this on purpose? It took me until the next day and the pain to clear until I realized that they were asking if I was in a car accident (answer: no). Ohhh. But, it did beg the question on how to prevent this in the future, and I think it's pretty easy: Don't land on your shoulder or outstretched arm. However, if you must, try using bubble wrap first, you know, just to keep you safe. (And if you do, take a picture and let me know so I can get a good laugh out of it.)

In Cures Rock! fashion, I didn't cry, but I'm spending plenty of time laughing at the humor of this situation and wondering why my cat-like moves led me astray last week. ;) At this point, we're postponing surgery as there was no shortening of the shoulder/clavicle area, so we're going to see if the bones will heal on their own. Guess it's time I start drinking a lot of milk!

For those asking, YES, I am still planning races so I have something on my calendar to start training for again after I heal. At this point, we've got a Cures Rock! running team for the Huntington Beach Surf City Half/Full Marathons and LIVESTRONG Austin Half/Full marathons. ...Because, afterall, as my friend John Z. was happy to point out, the one thing the clavicle IS good for, is for hanging those race medals around your neck!

Stupid Cancer Happy Hour - San Diego

June 30th is quickly approaching! And we're very excited about our upcoming Stupid Cancer Happy Hour. This one is extra special because i2y is doing a joint event with mAss kickers, and it's i2y's 6th month here in San Diego!

We also want this to be our biggest event yet. So find some time -- and a friend or two --- and come out with us. Cancer survivors, researchers, social workers, supporters of survivors....ALL are welcome! If you think cancer is stupid, well, this happy hour is for you!

Rockin' the San Diego Rock 'n' Roll Race for LLS

Yesterday I ran and completed the Dodge San Diego Rock 'n' Roll race....along with 30,000 of my closest friends. The race benefits the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), and I've been training as a member of Team in Training (TNT) to raise funds for LLS.

June 5th wasn't just "race day." It was also National Cancer Survivors Day. As a 3x cancer survivor, there was special meaning in lacing up my shoes, adding a "survivor bib" to the back of my race singlet, and getting out there on the concrete to pound cancer into the pavement.

I'm truly grateful to everyone that donated to LLS, and that continues to support me and the Cures Rock! campaign. Trust me, yesterday me and about 3,000 other TNT runners pounded Cancer into the pavement!
Since I know many of you couldn't make the race and were virtually cheering, I thought you'd appreciate some race highlights from my perspective. Again, thank you for your continued support of the Cures Rock! campaigns --- we will kick cancer to the curb. LIVESTRONG! GO TEAM! CURES ROCK!

2011 Dodge San Diego Rock 'n' Roll Race Highlights:

Total $ Raised for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society at this race: Over $9 Million!!

Best Running Training Pal!: Erin. A loyal friend, and an awesome running buddy that proves running CAN be a team sport! GO TEAM! She didn't run this race because she has the Alaska race to run in a few weeks, but she did stick by my side at the Surf City (Huntington Beach) and LIVESTRONG (Austin) Half Marathons earlier this year as part of Team Cures Rock! And, she came out to support along the course.

Pre-race moments: Tweeting with other runners prior to the race (really built up the excitement!). Getting out of my car in the pitch dark, pre-dawn hours and not being able to find a single landmark in the dirt lot of thousands of cars so I could find my car again. The runners getting out of their car next to me tried to write the serial number of the light post down...yup, it was that dark. Also, rode the shuttle bus with a team that had raised money to build a hospital in Africa. We shared a passion for running for charity, and I shared that I had only plans to have fun during the race, but wasn't planning on winning it --- to which one of the African and incredibly speedy runners replied, "maybe today is your day." Loved that team. :) Hope they all had an incredible day too.

Funniest people seen on the course: Guy holding sign saying, "Sweat is Sexy" (liar) and a guy holding a sign at the .2 mile marker that said "You're almost there" which he would flip to the other side that read "Only 26 more miles" (just plain mean).

Biggest inspiration: A woman on the side of the road holding a sign that said, "Thanks for running for TNT. I'm a survivor." Also, I looked at my yellow "LiveStrong" wristband I wore in honor of National Survivors Day and I knew I would never stop running and raising funds until we find a cure for cancer.

Favorite Spectator: It's true. I adopted a spectator. A gentleman who was riding his bike and cheering for his daughter in an AZ bike jersey, kept appearing about 5x along my run. His sign was simple: "Left Right. Left Right. Left Right." Most the time, by the time I'd run into him again, those simple words kept me moving. Very zen, and it kept me mindful. I actually stopped to introduce myself and thank him. Spectating is a tough sport, too.

My break-down moment: Some runners were goofing around and one crashed into me. Slamming into my foot. At Mile 3. I suddenly felt very alone out there. Took me until Mile 4 to clear my head, suck up to the pain and refocus on the reasons "why" I was running the race.

Surprises during race: Seeing friends and past TNT teammates unexpectedly along the course route cheering (thank you, Myra, BreeAnn, Karin & Pat...and anyone else I forgot!). Having moments of running with my TNT coaches, captains & mentors along the route at times I needed it most. Many thanks to Aimee for finding me in the last mile of my race and jogging with me for a bit. Need it. (You rock.)

Best Post-Race moments: Getting off the shuttle and hitting the parking lot with dread because I knew I would have trouble finding my car -- and I did. Thank goodness another runner asked me what time I arrived and pointed me in the direction of that set of cars. To "pay it forward," I then spent another hour or so driving other lost runners around the huge dirt lot to find their cars. I mean, everyone just ran 13.1 or 26.2 miles -- did they really need to then walk around a huge lot looking for their cars? (Note to self: Suggest to RNR that they mark the lot next year). But, I met some great new running buddies. On the way home, stopped at a burger restaurant for food, and they comped my meal....and gave me extra food to go. Yum.

Favorite Question: "When's your next race?" The best is getting asked this during the race. :) But, I've also been asked it several times afterwards. Stay tuned to this blog...there will be more to come. But, I think it's safe to say that we will have a Cures Rock! team pulled together for Surf City (Huntington Beach) and LIVESTRONG (Austin) Full/Half Marathons again (seriously, I want a BIG team for Austin!)...and maybe even L.A. But first, give me a day or two to recover. All my brain power is working on moving sore muscles at the moment. *smile* In the meantime, check-out Team in Training and Team LIVESTRONG.

Overall, it was a great race. As I like to say, "When your feet get tired, run with your heart" -- and there is no doubt that I ended up running most of that race with my heart. I am truly thankful to be cancer-free, and I am truly thankful for all of those that donate and that support the Cures Rock! campaigns to spread awareness about cancer and the 28 million in the world fighting it. GO TEAM! CURES ROCK!

In Gratitude on Memorial Day

Take time today to remember those that paid the ultimate sacrifice and to thank those in military that continue to protect our freedom.

Here are a few ideas on how you can observe the day today....

...by visiting cemeteries and placing flags or flowers on the graves of our fallen heroes.

...by flying the U.S. Flag at half-staff until noon.

...by flying the 'POW/MIA Flag' as well (Section 1082 of the 1998 Defense Authorization Act).

...by participating in a "National Moment of Remembrance": at 3 p.m. to pause and think upon the true meaning of the day, and for Taps to be played.

Your Life-Saving Drug is Out of Stock

As if cancer patients didn't have enough to battle, they are facing another obstacle in their fights now --- drug shortages. A shortage of a drug used to treat leukemia and lymphoma, called Cytarabine, is now calling national media attention to this problem. There is no substitute available for this drug.

It saved my life.

Cytarabine was one of the drugs in the "cocktail" for my Acute Myloid Leukemia that saved my life. I cannot imagine being told, "Sorry, there's a shortage, so we need to use a second tier chemo-regimen," or "Sorry, there's a shortage, so we need to stop your treatment early. You could die."

I find it completely unacceptable that a life-saving drug is in shortage, and that the manufacturers didn't have to notify the FDA that this could be a problem. Thankfully, it's getting attention in articles in the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg News and Washington Post.

Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Robert Casey, Jr. (D-PA) have introduced the Preserving Access to Life-Saving Medications Act (S. 296), which will provide the FDA with a warning system in the form of notification of discontinuation or prolonged interruption of a medication's production....and help them better deal with shortages.

We're talking about a life vs. death issue here ---- this drug is given on Day 1 of the treatment protocol for Leuk patients ---access to it is truly a life saver.

I'm breaking all the blogging rules today about not getting too personal and making your blog all about "me me me!" Specifically, because yesterday was my birthday, and I have one thing to say:

After battling cancer 3 times, I have to admit that there were moments when I wasn't sure I'd see my next birthday. But here I am. ALIVE. Let me be the first to point out that this was a team effort. I know, it sounds wierd, right? But it's true. Dealing with all the ups and downs that a cancer diagnosis, battle and survivorship can bring takes an entire team. I was lucky in that I had the most extraordinary team in my corner. In my case, Cancer didn't stand a chance. We were on the Home team, baby!

So, instead of just wishing a Happy Birthday to me this week (and my twin) -- I also wanted to send out a massive, solidarity shout-out to my family, friends, medical team (traditional & integrative health teams), the Lance Armstrong Foundation/LIVESTRONG and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Thank you for all you did to ensure I'd be cancer-free and celebrating many, many more birthdays to come!!! At this point, I could add a bunch of emoticons to express my endless gratitude and appreciation, but (to spare the readers) hopefully you get my point. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

TNT: Pounding Cancer into the Pavement...AGAIN.

Well, this morning my alarm clock went off and here's what happened:

My heart was happy.

My brain was wondering why the heck I was up at o'dark-thirty.

My body was crying.

It's true. Today was the first day of my marathon training season with Team in Training (TNT). I'm training for the San Diego Rock 'n' Roll Marathon and raising funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

I'm a little nostalgic today. I first started this blog back in 2008 after my first battles with cancer -- because I wanted to document my own "come back" to life and training for my first marathon with TNT. A few years later, and I'm still running...and I won't stop running (& blogging) until we find a cure.

So, my TNT Summer Season blogging begins again. I'll be posting more information and will share more of my story as I continue to fundraise (and run) to pound Cancer into the pavement.

As many of you know, for many Cures Rock! events the phrase "Not all heroes wear capes" is written somewhere on the t-shirt. That's because we believe there's a lot of ways to be a hero and the important thing is to use your talent to make a different in this world. Some of us wear running shoes instead of capes....or donate to support a great cause.

One of our sponsors for the Cures Rock! tour (Thanks, Susan Briggs!) was "The Rock" Church's Running & Triathlon Ministry. They are hosting their first annual Superhero Mile race in San Diego, CA tomorrow --- yup, capes and all -- in an effort to fight poverty in West Africa.

Yes, you can bring a friend to walk with Cures Rock! Take a Swing at Cancer! (SFY Event a Success!)

Thank you to all the players, guests, sponsors, vendors and volunteers that made our 1st Annual Swing Fore! Yellow Golf Charity Classic a great event! A picture is worth a thousand words, so I'll add just a few comments to go with some pictures from our event. (If you'd like to see more, see the links at the bottom.)

The day started off crisp and cool as the players began registering for their tournament. The Helicopter ball drop game was the highlight of the morning. As the day carried on, the temperatures started to climb along with the energy and high spirits.

There was no lack for laughing and competitiveness out there on the course (all in the name of charity, of course!). The vendors and sponsors had some great distractions for the players which were a lot of fun out there.

Meanwhile, "back at the ranch" (a.k.a. Country Club), the volunteers were busy getting ready for the evening's dinner and live auction, driving the course to check-in with the players and sponsors and overall having a great time. I was personally very touched by Geoff, a local cancer survivor and awesome cyclist who just had surgery a few weeks ago and still came out to volunteer and help us. Truly that's the LIVESTRONG spirit!

Everybody was generous in spirit (and their wallets) at the dinner and live/silent auctions that evening. The highlighted game to end the day was Ferrari's "Hole in One" game (yes, the prize was a $250,000 gift certificate at Ferrari of San Diego). So fun!

At the end of the day, I was touched and amazed to hear everyone's connection to the Cause and thought the evening event was the perfect touch to an amazing day.

What We Should Talk More About (CAM)

In thinking of the LIVESTRONG Challenge going on this weekend in Austin, I started to consider about all the ways the Lance Armstrong Foundation challenged me to take control of my fight with cancer, and create awareness of prevention and/or treatment of the disease. One of the biggest lessons that I've come away with is that cancer patients have the right to make their own choices about the way they handle their treatment.

Did you know that more than 70% of all cancer patients use complementary and alternative (CAM) medical therapies, according to a study in the journal Cancer?

I bet that leaves you scratching your head because I'm also betting that the two treatments you've heard about are radiation and chemotherapy. Well, think again. Patients (including me) learn about these other options as they search for a way to mitigate side-effects of traditional western medicine, and also find a way to heal themselves.

Yes, I'm going into that space nobody wants to talk about, except in hushed tones -- "uh yeah, I tried meditation and tai chi, and it worked...but don't tell anyone." WHY NOT? Why not let folks know that there are options?!? Why do we do this in our society?

Let me be clear. I firmly believe in the science of medicine, and as a survivor of multiple fights with cancer, I've done my share of radiation and chemo. But - I also believe in balance -- and that it's ok to integrate some other, uh, shall we say, "more unique" therapies into the mix.

Times are changing and those days of hushed voices are long gone (or should be). This ain't yo mama's healthcare anymore. Now, many medical centers DO have integrative health centers, like UCSD or Scripps -- and I applaud them loudly (maybe even with a wolf whistle or two to cheer them on). Last year, the American Cancer Society released its Complete Guide to Complementary and Alternative Cancer Therapies reference book listing hundreds of therapies and possible side effects. Ok, I admit, some of the therapies listed in there just don't look safe (uh, shark cartilage? gulp.), but they also tell you that. My own personal verdict is still out on the use of supplements --- I feel and have lots of research to back me up - that some supplements may interfere with the way your body breaks down chemo drugs...making them less effective (or worse, toxic).

However, most CAM patients aren't looking for cures -- they are looking for help with side-effects, reduce stress, boost their immune system and fight back against recurrences. And many therapies listed for that include exercise, prayer, meditation, tai chi, yoga, qi gong in the mind-body category which I think are all equally awesome. And yes, I integrated all of these into my own treatment plan...and still do to stay healthy.

Like I said, the LIVESTRONG Challenge got me thinking about my own battle with cancer today. I realized I've never taken the time to write a post about some of the things I did outside my western treatments, and I'm going to start changing that. No more hushed tones about prayer, meditation, mindfulness and yoga -- the stuff reduces stress folks...try it! I'm not advocating religion which is what some of you may think, but I am advocating slowing down and treating your body with kindness when its struggling to fight this disease.

My biggest advice however is that if you're considering any alternative medicine -- please (please!) -- talk to your medical doctor or oncologist about it first. As always, I believe in an integrative "team" approach is the best way to get healthy and prevent illness in the future.

Cancer better run for those Texas hills because 10,000 people just arrived in Austin for the LIVESTRONG Challenge (benefitting the Lance Armstrong Foundation). I'm already bummed that I won't be there this year, but tremendously sparked and on fire for the cause seeing the viritual (and in person) rally that's happening for this event. If you've never been, get it on your calendar for next year!! LIVESTRONG Challenge participants and their cheerleaders (whether in person or online) ROCK.

For my friends, soon-to-be-friends or tweeps (and of course, the Lance Armstrong Foundation staff that I adore)....know that I'm there in spirit with you today. Can you envision stopping Cancer in its tracks?

I can. And so can a lot of other people.

TONIGHT is the "Stand Up to Cancer" special (8pm PT/ET & 7pm CT on NBC/ABC/CBS/Fox).

Cancer takes one person every minute. One life in a moment. They are our family, our best friends, ourselves.

In the time it's taken me to write this blog while I'm snacking on my lunch and the sun is shining outside --- Cancer has taken 10 more people from this world.

For me or any of us to wait any longer for someone else to save our lives and the lives of those we love is absolutely unforgivable. I started the Cures Rock! global advocacy and awareness campaign for young adults battling cancer because I was inspired to act based on my own personal experience with the disease -- and I knew I just couldn't "sit back" and rely on the current health system alone to do it.

SU2C has a similar mission statement (and they love the color orange as much as me!). They are calling on the public to help take matters into our own hands, investing in a revolution that will change the way scientists work to understand and treat these diseases. Stand Up To Cancer is more than "just another TV special." It is a force that we need to urgently move cancer research forward.

Please take the time tonight to watch the TV special (not that you have a choice because ALL the major networks are going to air this show!) --- and donate while you're at it. For those like me that aren't the hugest TV fans (shh...) -- take it to the 'Net.

My "Re-Birthday"

One year ago today, I received test results back from my oncologist that I was “unremarkable.” That’s right – my momma always told me I was special, but in the case with cancer last year, I didn't mind her being wrong. Being cancer-free was music to my ears last September.

For the record, the battle doesn't stop once someone is cancer free --- and being in remission is not the same as cured. There are doctor visits, side effects and repercussions from so much "poison" (a.k.a. chemo) & "glow-worm" (a.k.a. radiation) treatments, and the fun of always looking over one's shoulders. It's why I won't give up with my Cures Rock! campaign -- because early detection & survivorship is key...and we still need to find a cure.

Since 09-09 became a special day in my books for a multitude of reasons, in honor of the ~900,000 people living with blood cancer in the U.S., I’m asking you all to do something “remarkable” today in the fight against cancer – and here’s a few ideas (You didn’t think I’d leaving you hanging, did you?):

Cures Rock! Spirit

"The waiting room was filled with people twice my age," said one of my best friends that was having surgery to remove skin cancer. "I know the feeling," I said, having been in her shoes before with my own cancer battle.

This was yesterday, and it served as a reminder and a motivator to keep the "Cures Rock!" advocacy campaign moving. It's important to raise awareness about cancer in young adults...and the very different life challenges and concerns we have when going through it.

I've lapsed a little over the past month on my blog, twitter, etc. Many of you have pinged me asking what's up. To be honest, I needed to take a month to regroup, refocus and think about where things were going to head next. Not a bad idea considering the first half of this year was filled with three marathons and a half marathon to raise funds for cancer research, the Cures Rock! Tour (ultra run from CA to AZ), the Guinness World Record Run, planning golf tournaments, etc. Together, not only have we touched a lot of lives, but together, the Cures Rock! advocacy team (all of you) has raised a lot -- and I mean... A LOT -- of money to support non-profit cancer organizations. You all just plain ROCK. *whew*

So, I admit. I was a tad burnt out there the past few weeks and needed to pour lots of hours into my job (yes, I have a day job) and also refocus my vision for Cures Rock!

However, there were two things yesterday that have snapped me back into action:

1. One of my best friends reminding me that the young adult population is the "orphan" cancer generation -- often left in waiting rooms as the so-called odd (wo)man out.
2. I had a reunion with my sisters that were both in town, and we spent the day at the beach with my neices and nephew.

Specifically, #1 reminds me "why" I'm doing what I'm doing --- to change the stigma of cancer and raise awareness about young adults facing many aspects of it. #2 reminds me of my own fight and how grateful I am to be a survivor, so I can enjoy these type of days with my family. It reminds me of my own faith that someday my little nieces and nephew will grow up and say, "What's cancer?" Cures Rock! will have had a part in that effort.

This is what Cures Rock! is all about, folks. So, enjoy your summer, 'cause we're (yees, I said "we" which includes "you") about to get serious with some advocating, fundraising and all aroud social media, tweeting, facebooking, blogging, skyping -- you name it--- and soon. :) Any suggestions you have, I'd love to hear.

Meet Mike Sheehy - Guinness World Record Holder!

You've all read my blogs about my crazy Cures Rock! adventures....many of them in thanks to my good friend, Mike Sheehy, who likes to use his endurance running talent to help me kick cancer to the curb. The inspiration he's provided to so many cancer patients and survivors like me is endless!!

On June 6, 2010, Mike broke the Guinness World Record (GWR) for "most amount of miles run in one week by an individual" (He holds the record at 408.4 miles.) And, he did it all in the name of kickin' cancer to the curb! Two words = Holy macaroni!!

If you're in the Southern California area, you'll have a chance to meet Mike TOMORROW, as he'll be sharing about his GWR adventures and why he did it! They'll be stories, a "fun run," prizes and snacks!

WHEN: THURSDAY, July 8th (TOMORROW!)

WHERE: The Running Center - Temecula

TIME: 6 p.m. sharp

WHAT: Mike Sheehy Meet-Up re: Guinness World Record

The Running Center will start at 6pm with Mike Sheehy sharing his GWR stories (and lies) for a few minutes. Maybe it'll take 10-15 mins?
Then, they'll allow time for autographs/photos/making-fun-of-Mike. How many times can you say you met a Guinness World Record holder? ;) Bring a camera.
All this will be followed by an optional "fun run" (with routes of 2, 4 or 6 miles). You do not have to stay for the fun run, but walkers and runners are welcome (so if you're not a runner, grab a map, come on out an walk a couple miles...I think it ends at a dog park, so bring your dog if you're so inclined). Be ready to go in your running/walking gear if you're coming!
Following the run, they'll have some snacks, pizza, etc. (that's right...no foodie until after you burn some calories!)

Even if you can't stay for the run, it'll be a fun chance to hear from Mike for a couple minutes, or at least slap him on the back for being crazy enough to run 408 AMAZING miles in one week, all in the name of kicking cancer to the curb. If you have any local running friends -- please let them know, too!

I'll also be there, so anyone up for a "Cures Rock! Meet-Up"....come on out!!

Still alive to run a great race with TNT & LIVESTRONG friends today?

Today's race was all about celebrating life and enjoying each moment of running. Last year, I ran the Seattle Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon while I was doing chemotherapy to treat my cancer. There was a group of friends that stuck by my side to ensure I finished it -- and trust me, they endured some of my most brilliant "bite me" moments, weakness and frustration. As friends, runners and fellow cancer warriors -- they knew I could do it. (And, they actually remained friends with me later, which is cool.)

(Looking back, it makes me realize that it probably wasn't the smartest thing I've ever done -- but it was what I needed to do to fight. Thanks, Coach Bill, for helping me pull it off -- both in getting me through last year's race, and helping me with a year of recovery and training so I could keep on using my running with TNT as a personal way to fight back. Means the world to me.)

Today, I went back to run the Seattle RNR Half Marathon. I couldn't leave unfinished business with that course -- and trust me, it had whopped me good last year. Today's mission was just to enjoy myself, look for bald eagles and look at the lake, -- and, remember that it's not about that finish line, but the journey taking oneself to it. And for that reason alone, it was a special day.

This race was for, and about, all my favorite cancer warriors. Last night, I wrote Ty's name on my bib (a.k.a. Captain Cure artist), as he just finished his 1st chemo of his recurrent cancer. I talked to him on the phone last night, and have to say that I'm honored to have him in my life. He was speaking at the Relay For Life's Luminary event today, so I missed him, but he ran all 13.1 miles with me in spirit. Ty, you are a true warrior, and we're all behind you.

This morning, I was texting and texting...and then texting some more, to ensure I met up with first-time marathoner and a member of Team LIVESTRONG, Amanda H. She's a fellow LIVESTRONG grassroots supporter hailing from Kansas City (Rock Chalk Jayhawks!!). We met at the 2008 LIVESTRONG Summit, but haven't seen each other since! Today, I had the honor to connect up with her at the starting line (and of course, text back and forth after our finishes).

Of course, I couldn't imagine running this race without my San Diego Team in Training teammates. Last year, so many of them got me through this race, so it was emotional, exciting and well, just plain fun...to all get together to run it again. From the starting line through the finish line, we had fun telling stories, running in silence, slowing down when I was processing a few rough moments in thinking about last year's chemo race and smiling BIG when we split off from the marathoners (happy with our choice to only run the half this year). Huge thanks to Erin McK & Kim L. for running with me today & sharing such a big celebration! Today's race was just plain ol' fashion FUN.

I also love surprises -- and right as we hit the 26 mile marker, I ran into a personal *surprise* spectator...a dear friend that came to cheer me in. (Thanks, T.) It was like icing on the top of the cupcake! (I love cupcakes, too.)

At the finish line, I met up with my girl, Ensley E. (a.k.a. Enz) who is one of the most amazing Cures Rock! warriors and sweetest folks that I know. She fights like hell to make sure we find a cure for cancer -- which is something I deeply love about her.

I also met up with a fellow blogger, Art R. (Racn 4 A Cure blog) and fellow TNT teammate from Virginia. After a year of blogging about cancer survivorship and running/racing to find a cure, we finally met in person. Art, you are amazing -- keep up the inspiration!!

As you can see -- the race today wasn't about the finish line. Life is short. It truly is not about the "outcomes," but about the race and journey along the way. In fact, as we headed into the finish line chute today, I asked my girlfriends to slow down. I wanted to soak in every last minute of this journey and live in the moment. Who knows what life brings any of us or what the next year holds. However, I can tell you this, if you take the time to live in the moment, to appreciate the souls around you, to do something for someone else -- and to live each day as though it's your last -- life will take on a whole new perspective.

Congrats to everyone that ran in today's race. A special thank you to all cancer warriors raising funds and racing for a cure. CURES ROCK!

First Connections & Lasting Friendships

I'll leave it up to LLS to share my story, but it was certainly fun to see this article on the LLS Blog today.

It's about my first connection with a peer that was also going through AML leukemia treatment years ago. Turns out her husband works where I work (and worked for Mike, the runner that ran on my behalf when I was first diagnosed). We don't live in different states like the article mentioned...in fact, I work in the city she lives in. But the rest of the story is right on...after all these years, we still missed each other at the race!!

Cori is a pretty amazing person, and it was a huge help to be able to virtually chat with someone about the fight we were going through. Cori, you rock. Cures Rock!

Failure is Not an Option

A few folks have emailed and asked me what got me through my 5th marathon last week. One word = FINO.

FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION.

Yes, I realize I have "borrowed" this phrase from the Apollo XIII mission, but it's what has seen me through some tough cancer battles...and sometimes equally tough marathons. You see...the whole Apollo XIII drama starts with the simple statements:

Swigert: 'Okay, Houston, we've had a problem here.'
Duke: 'This is Houston. Say again please.'
Lovell: 'Uh, Houston, we've had a problem.'

Ok, so, I didn't have a cyrogenic oxygen tank explode -- but I did have to hear the words, "You have cancer." And years ago, as I stared at my doctor, I suddenly found myself thinking,... "Houston, we have a problem."

As the history books reflect (at least in the movie), as Apollo XIII approached the critical earth-to-moon decision loop, Gene Kranz (the lead flight director) announced to his crew in Houston :

"Failure is not an option."

Somehow, this all made sense in my cancer battling world -- and seems to translate to the world of marathoning for me now. Yes, I do wonder if Kranz had meant that failure had been an option at one time but wasn't any more??? The mission was beyond testing physical limits. It was far more than testing athletic endurance or engineering prowess. It was an unfolding study in problem solving --- a solution-finding, keep-the-faith-against-all-odds sort of spectacularly rare, defining moment.

My sisters and I were trolling through some old slides, and this one of the three of us visiting my dad in his aerospace engineering work days made me smile (see pic). Yes, this past weekend, as I ran my 5th marathon (3rd marathon this year!), the word "FINO" was written in indelible marker on my arm in huge letters. I draw on the strength of that statement in tough moments. You see, creativity and the willingness to solve life-threatening problems doesn't always have to be inspired by a "muse." Sometimes it's a sheer force of reaction that is triggered when all else fails, when you hit the "dark night of the soul."

Over the past few years, I've found that it's those moments in my life, when *everything* is at stake and failure is possible (but not an option, of course) --- when our assumptions about life are being challenged and how things "should be" just won't work anymore -- it is then that we launch new missions....new dreams....new plans...

Kranz said, "Forget the flight plan. From this moment on we are improvising a new mission. How do we get our men home?"

For all of you out there hearing those words, "You have cancer" --- or for those that have heard it before --- or for those running your first marathon races --- just remember, "FINO." While you may have to adjust to the challenges of a tough situation, learn to forget your current flight plan. It's easier to quit (but don't). I've found that tough and unexpected moments can evoke such creative change in our lives, but only if we're not allowed to "abort the mission." Launch a new mission in your life, and dream bigger than you could ever imagine.

FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION. LIFE IS MAGIC.

Guinness World Record Officially Certified!

What an amazing day. Mike Sheehy was officially certified as the new Guinness World Record "Most Amount of Miles Run in One Week" and received the award at the end of the San Diego Rock 'n' Roll Marathon!!! True to his spirit and promise, he immediately donated the award to the San Diego/Hawaii Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). Over $42,000 (and counting) was raised by these efforts.

A bunch of other personal records (P.R.'s) were set this week by a few thousand other runners that trained and ran their first marathons, also raising funds for LLS through their Team in Training Program. I know there were a few of my blog readers that apologized for "only" give a few dollars to my crazy adventures -- but I wanted to share with you how amazing those dollars add up -- they DO make a difference. 4,000 runners raised funds for LLS and together (for this event alone) they raised a collective $12 Million!!! THANK YOU! (There were 30,000 runners on the course today --- maybe next year, we'll have a third of those athletes raising for charity! Maybe one of them will be you!!)

Today was National Cancer Survivor's Day, so I'd like to thank everyone that has helped, cheered and donated to support the LLS. I am alive today, and this organization's research and patient services has a huge part in that reason. (THANK YOU, LLS!!)

Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. So I'll leave the rest of my blog up to them to describe this amazing race day (yup, I'm tired...it was one hot, humid day out on that race course today...).

Speechless: GWR Day 6.

It's hard to write a blog post when one is speechless. Today was one of those days made up of the stuff that dreams are made of...it was surreal and one of the most special days.

Today, I watched Mike run past the current record and unofficially break the GWR record! The official GWR auditor comes tomorrow, but it doesn't matter. In my book, Mike has won. I am proud, humbled, amazed and honored to know him....and touched that he'd even spend a moment with me today. He makes me believe we WILL cure cancer. He makes me believe I WILL stay in remission.

I came away from this moment tonight speechless and reflective. I walked away from the crowds and sat by Mission Bay watching the fireworks (I've nicknamed "Mike's Fireworks") above the surface of the water and waited for him to come back to the hotel.

I promise I will write more about the Guinness World Record Attempt tomorrow, but for tonight, I think I'm just going to smile and go to bed. Instead of sadly attempting to capture this day in words, I am going to soak up every moment of this excitement and awe first.

It's a draw...

Today was a long and tough day out there on the Guinness World Record Attempt course. Mike had it tough as the day turned into night...and he was still out there running. I had to work all day, so I couldn't get out there to see him until afterwards, but he still had a few hours to run.

By the time I got there, I saw a road-weary friend so I admit that a part of me was worried. Not about whether or not he'd finish (I knew he would), but about his body. Until I saw him run in -- If you haven't seen Mike run in smooth, ultrarunner, gazelle like strides, you are missing out on something amazing. The headlamps came out, Mike narrowed the team of runners on the course once it got dark, and we all waited to see him finish, staring into the darkness to look for any sign of a neon vest. When we saw them, there were cheers.

When Mike stopped for a second, I said, "Way to kick cancer's ass, Mike!!!" which was followed by claps from all those around the finish line. He smirked, shook his head wearily and said, "Today, I think it was more of a draw."

While I realize that Mike's too busy running to read my blog this week -- I'm still going to post a reminder about how this is nowhere near a draw. A star burns up it's very essence to bring light to others. It may have been a tough day, but Mike, you are bringing hope and inspiration to cancer fighters, survivors and families everywhere. You're raising thousands of dollars in the name of finding a cure for cancer (by the way, folks, click here to please help donate to LLS & help us reach the GWR goal!!). THAT is not a draw. THAT IS KICKING CANCER'S ASS. Sure, it's a tough day. But, you're helping us win this war on this freakin' stupid, deadbeat disease. For that, I am grateful more than you'll ever comprehend.

Today was the 38th birthday of my friend, Mike. No, seriously, don't stop reading this blog post...trust me, he's awesome. I deeply wish that everyone had a friend just like him. Which, I admit, would probably be impossible because Mike is one of those special rock stars in life.

Today was not only Mike's birthday, but it was Day 4 of his Guinness World Record (GWR) attempt -- which, by the way, he's running in order to help raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). To date, ~$35,000 has been raised for this attempt...and his new goal is $38,000 (after all, he's 38 today) -- so, if you'd like to wish him a happy birthday...*hint*hint*....go to the GWR web site and donate $38...$380...or $3800! Get my point?

A sports writer called today who's writing an article on Mike's attempt at the GWR. Can't blame him...Mike's doing amazing things with his running gift. *karma points*

He asked me the typical questions...and then the writer faltered, re-phrased his question a few times, and then finally said, "I have to know... what emotions do you feel to know that Mike started all of this in support of you..." He, of course, made the caveat that he understands that Mike's mission is so much bigger now in this fight against cancer....but how did I feel about having someone do something like this originally years ago for me?...

Wow. I was speechless. Nobody has ever asked me that question. Here's my answer: I'm tremendously grateful, extremely humbled and honored to have a friend like Mike. The cancer community as a whole is better off for having him as an advocate. I think he's amazing. (And, yes, I'm biased.) We talked about how it would make sense if Mike were doing this for a family member or something...but for a friend and coworker? Even more unusual. At that point, I believe the writer began to understand the type of person that Mike is and the passion he has to fight cancer.

So, today, I wish Mike a happy birthday. You are a warrior with a heart of gold. I know you'll break this Guinness World Record. I know you'll reach your fundraising goal for LLS. On behalf of cancer survivors everywhere -- thank you. I am alive because of the funds you've raised. Maybe someday, ...that "lucky dollar" you keep searching for, will fund the research that will help find a cure for cancer so I can stop looking over my shoulder and find peace that it'll never come back. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Memorial Day

Day 2 of the Guinness World Record attempt is in the history books.

Mike = 2.

Cancer = 0.

Today is also Memorial Day. In my heart, I am very grateful for those that serve our country. In watching the GWR events today, I couldn’t help but smile, as I feel my granddad would have loved today. He was a WWII combat cameraman and a cancer fighter. (You can read about my blog post on him here.) I know he would have appreciated the “young lad” Kerry who is documenting Mike’s world record journey. I know he would have been proud of my own battle to fight cancer, the disease that stole him from me and my family.

Take a few minutes today to thank the heroes in your life. Thank those in your lives that are protecting our freedom. And, hug a cancer fighter to encourage them in their own battle against the enemy of Cancer.

To those that fight…to those that will not give up…and to those that have gone before us...THANK YOU

Mike, I am grateful for your service to our country and your service now in helping the world fight cancer. (For those of you that don’t know, Mike served with the 1/75 Rangers.) I also want to send a huge thank you to everyone that came out and showed him support today from TNT, Abbott Labs, friends-of-friends and coworkers-of-coworkers.

Guinness World Record Attempt - Day 1

I will probably sound like a broken record this week (pun intended) as I blog about another crazy adventure! :)

Many of you remember Mike Sheehy, the ultrarunner who ran the Cures Rock! Tour in January to help me raise funds for LLS and raise awareness about blood cancers. And, he's been an amazing friend through my own personal battle with cancer over the past few years. Well...the next adventure is finally here...

Mike is going to attempt (and will) to break the Guinness Book of World Records (GWR) for most amount of miles run in 7 days. The goal? To raise another $30,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society AND kick cancer's bootie.

Today was Day 1 of the GWR. It was so great to see so many folks out there, from the GWR Team, Team in Training and Abbott Labs. I admit it...my stomache had butterflies. I was excited for Mike and this attempt...but I was also secretly nervous. At the end of the day, folks, Mike is my friend. I worry for his safety and health. (He'd make fun of me for writing this, but hey...he's running right now, so I know he's not reading my blog...). After the Cures Rock! Tour in January, I know how fun and how tough these events are for Mike and the support crew. But, I have zero doubts that he'll pull this off. He will break this record. And I have no doubts that someday we'll find a cure for cancer.

These dollars save lives. Today, I was so happy to see Ligaya out there with us. She's a fellow young adult blood cancer survivor, like me...and we both share the same re-birthday date of 9-9-09! She met up with our team during the Cures Rock! Tour...and came out today for the kick-off to cheer on Mike. We're both alive because of the services of LLS and funds to help find better therapies. Thank you to all of you that have donated or spread awareness about this extreme event!

My worry started to disappear as the day went on because every time I saw Mike, he was smiling, cracking jokes...and well, being his usual sarcastic self. And, I just knew the day was ultra-amazing when Michellie Jones (yes,THE Michellie Jones) showed up to surprise Mike and ran a leg as an official course witness. It's the first time in a loonnngggg time anyone has seen him speechless, I think. ;) Thank you, Michellie, for making this day so special for Mike and the GWR Run event for LLS!

A Moment of Silence

Today was "final prep"for our Team in Training Marathon Team....which means, our races are next weekend! It's hard to imagine that four months ago, most of this team had never run more than a few mile and now they are prepped and ready to run their first 13.1 or 26.2 mile race. The whole team has been training as an effort to raise funds to fight cancer. San Diego's total raised to date so far.... a whopping $700,000!!! (My team has raised $275,000, with a goal to hit $350,000 by the end of season.) Go ahead...say it...that's FREAKISHLY AWESOME!

There was something very special about today's run. The Team added a half-mile run in silence in honor of Memorial Day and all those that have served our country. We also ran in memory of all those that have gone before us in this fight against cancer. Very powerful. Please consider doing something similar in your runs and rides this weekend -- and pass it on. Just take 5 mins to sit/ride/run/walk in silence in and remember those we honor for Memorial Day.

Tomorrow...the adventure continues, as our crazy San Diego crew is up to more extreme stunts to raise funds to find a cure for cancer (what?! You didn't really think we'd stop after the Cures Rock! Tour run to PHX, did you?). Mike Sheehy begins his amazing attempt to beat the current Guinness World Record for most amount of miles run in one week by an individual. The goal? It's one of "those days," for me today, but I know I cannot let it get to me. Life is waaayyyy to short to waste a minute on "those days" (or "those mind states") vs. living in beautiful states of mind and sharing our light with the world.

I admit. I have my moments, but overcoming them is amazing. All you cancer survivors and patients out there better be cheering right now. Go look chaos in the eye and give it the 'finger.' :)

TNT Train Run (18 miles)

Today was the famous Team in Training (TNT) "Train Run" for the San Diego Marathon team. It's true. Teams all over the world hear about how our team takes the train 18 miles up the coast to Oceanside, CA -- and then run all the way back to Solana Beach, CA....you know, where Pizza Port and the beer is located....

We call it a "commitment run." So often in life it's easy to come up with excuses or to not follow through....but on a run like this?? You have no choice. You walk off the train, the train conductor wishes you "good luck, runners" as the mass of runners shivering in the dawn hours nervously walk off the train --- and there is just one way back to your car. RUN TO IT.

It's my favorite run of every season. Due to my recent Boston Marathon (woot!), I ran 12 miles today, instead of the 18 miles. I felt like a slug for the first 6 miles. It's been a long week for a variety of reasons, and my heart wasn't quite in it yet. Then the adrenaline started pumping...my heart settled into the run....auto-pilot came on...and the last 6 miles rocked. My running buddy, Erin, and I had a great time. Seeing the ocean, talking about how lucky we are to be alive, listening to the birds and cracking jokes helped us both enjoy the day.

The first six miles, a runner in front of us kept running super fast (with a full pack on...huh?) and then stopping to walk. There was no "jog" or slower pace...it was his "super-fast pace" or "stop." Two switches. Even in the beginning of my run, I took those first 6 miles out too fast and pushed too hard (which makes no sense for a training, long run). So, I guess I was right there with him. It became an analogy for so much in my life....

BALANCE. So often, it's a perspective we miss. In fighting cancer, it's also very needed. Even with facing potential tough outcomes, you can't go full throttle and force things in life. Balance in running, as in life and so many other things, is the key. I can't say I practice what I preach. I'm one of the folks that just might take pliers to pull the flowers open on a budding rose. But, I know it's needed. Today, when we slowed our pace just a touch, took time to breathe in the scenery and find our balance, we had a great run.

And yes, that run ended at Pizza Port with beer (or water or cola or whatever). I'd like to say it was all in the spirit of finding that balance -- working really hard for that end goal, but also knowing when to *chill* with friends, old and new, and celebrate a mini-victory in our training.

The San Diego Rock 'n' Roll Marathon and the Guiness World Record event are a month away. Wish us luck -- and best of luck to all of you training for it!!! I had an amazing day hearing your stories about why you are running for charity, and I'm truly touched.

Guiness World Record Attempt - 7 Day Run

Well, ya'll didn't really expect me to write that our Cures Rock! Tour event in January (http://www.curesrocktour.com/) was the end of our cancer awareness stunts this year...did you?

If you caught the last day of that Cures Rock! Tour blog (check out my blog for dates January 16, 2010), you'd see that the CR Team was already talking about what was next. We were touched by the doctors and patients we met along the route...and it became all too clear that until there was a cure for cancer, we cannot stop.

Next stop? Hope. My friend, Mike, has been awesome enough to sign up for another amazing feat in order to raise awareness about blood cancers and cancer in young adults. And, perhaps, spread some inspiration along the way...(Thanks, Mike!)

We're sick of cancer...and this time -- WE ARE GOING BIG! (As if running from San Diego to Phoenix wasn't big enough!) Mike will be attempting to break the Guiness Book of World Records for the most amount of miles run in one week by an individual (May 30 - June 6 THIS YEAR!). It will culminate at the San Diego Rock 'n' Roll Marathon! The record stands at 351 miles...and he'll break it. Check out our web site at: http://www.gwr7dayrun.com/ for the info & his daily blog! People have asked me several times this week what I think about Mike attempting this feat. Here's what I think:

I am grateful. I am lucky to still be alive after battling cancer so many times, and I'm thankful for each day I'm on my path. I mean it. I have truly the most amazing friends in the world. In particular, Mike stood by me as a warrior in my own fight with cancer, embraced the spirit of Cures Rock! and has helped me immeasureable in growing this advocacy campaign. He hates cancer as much as I do. All the volunteers, runners, LLS and sponsors are also all in this fight for a cure.

The motto for the GWR 7 Day Run?

RECORDS CAN BE BROKEN. CANCER CAN BE CURED.

LLS' Esther Scott Memorial Award

Last night, I received the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Esther Scott Memorial award. I am honored and touched to be a recipient.

Esther Scott, the first individual to receive this award in 1999, was a remarkable woman. The award is one of the Chapter's most prestigious Volunteer awards. Much like Esther herself, it's given to someone that is "Dedication Personified" and to an individual/couple whose service and dedication endures.

Dedication personified. I like those words. A few folks asked me how I do all that I do, and I just said by doing it one step at a time --- by being devoted to a cause. My cause is fighting cancer. I admit, it's "selfish giving." I'm paying it forward because of all the amazing support and help I've received from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Lance Armstrong Foundation during my own fight with cancer. In the end, each effort I take to fundraise may raise the "magic dollar" --- the one I like to think will be the one that goes to the researcher that then finds the cure. A cure that may save my life. The Cures Rock! campaign is about dedication to the fight to find a cure for cancer. It's about working to change stigmas, raising awareness and fundraising for charities that are doing great work. A cure won't be found by "hoping" we stumble across it....we need to be diligent in working together as a community.

So, let's all renew our dedication to fighting cancer or whatever cause is near and dear to our hearts...whether that's AIDS, poverty, education....find the "cure" you want to fight for and make a difference using your gift of running, painting, singing.... You get my point. Cures Rock! is all about finding that inner passion for your cause and using your gift to make a difference in this world. We call it, "Give 360."

Thank you to LLS for this award. I am deeply grateful, and it served to inspire me even more to help do my part in supporting the fight against cancer. CURES ROCK!

Living Past My Expiration Date

When I was 31 years old, I was diagnosed with cancer. I was told I most likely would not have a long life span, and on that day, I didn't think I'd live to see my 35th birthday, which is today.

So, happy birthday to me. I'm still here. :)

Luckily, unlike the spoiled milk in your 'fridge and other sundries (oh, don't pretend you don't have some suspect expiration dates on things in your kitchen)...something happens to the human spirit when they stay alive pass their "expiration date" on this earth....WE LEARN HOW TO LIVE.

Every day since the day I was first diagnosed with cancer, I've learned a big lesson in living in the present. It was a 180 degree turn-around. I've learned to enjoy and live each day as it's my last one here on earth. I mean, after all, there is a 100% chance that living will kill a person. *smile* That's not to say I don't plan for the future. You know, I put money away for retirement, put money down on vacations, save up funds to take my niece for her first tatoo someday (ha ha, just kidding, sis!)...

The day I was told that I might not have long to live...was the same day that I made a choice that I would truly start living. (Oh, the irony.) And every year my birthday rolls around, I like to remind myself of this again.

This isn't something that pushes me to live out death-defying activities (I mean, seriously? I just escaped death with cancer? Why would I actually choose to jump out of a perfectly good airplane??!!...j/k), but it does mean I live with death as an advisor. (yes, you read that right.) I live as if today might be my last because I know that nothing is certain. I know how easy it is to be running on the beach one moment, and in the hospital diagnosed with leukemia another moment --- all in the same week. I know today might be "it," and knowing that changes everything.

Don't believe me? Try it. Try treating everyone around you and your life as if it were your last day on the planet. (Seriously, is it worth yelling at the old lady in the car ahead of you that's drivig too slow? Really?!)

During this past weekend at the Boston Marathon, I was telling another cancer warrior during the run that I feel in a way that I'm living past my "expiration date." I've battled cancer multiple times and somehow, I'm still here. The way I look at it, the time I'm on this planet is no longer my own. It's why I try to help other charities, fundraise every day I can, work on my Cures Rock! advocacy campaign to change the stigma of cancer, and run with so many of you.

The best birthday present all of you can give me? Live today as if it's your last. Hug your family, laugh your bootie off, and hand a few dollars to a homeless person. And, watch the sunset tonight or go for a run at sunset --- all without thinking about what you're doing later tonight or later this week or next year. For once, just watch the sunset. Feel the wind on your cheek, the warmth of the star, and be happy. And then, when you wake up tomorrow morning...do it all over again. Rinse and repeat.

So, happy birthday to me. (And, to my twin that shares this day with me.) May we all live it to the fullest, happiest and brightest --- as if it's our last --- and may our lives be just a little bit better because of it.

Eve of Boston Marathon - Photo Collage

I cannot believe I'm running the Boston Marathon for a second time tomorrow. Last year, I ran it days after treatment, and this year I run it cancer free. I will be pounding the pavement with a grateful pounding heart for all 26.2 miles tomorrow.

Why I Run...

Something has to drive a person to run 26.2 miles. Especially those last 6.2 miles because they are always particularly brutal on the spirit. "Mind over matter."

I run because I can. I run because this is my way of helping us take steps closer to finding a cure for cancer. I run because I want to change the stigma of cancer and show folks that...yes....I had cancer...and then I kicked it's butt and now run marathons! :)

This upcoming Boston Marathon, I run in honor or memory of some special cancer warriors. I also run in honor of cancer heroes that have opened up their wallets to donate money to the Lance Armstrong Foundation in order to "sponsor a mile" of my race. I'd like to think that one of them donated the "magic dollar" -- the one that will be the dollar that goes to fund a scientist that then finds a cure.

It's taper week for those running the Boston Marathon on Monday. This means less running mileage, a few pounds of weight gain....and we all go just a *wee* bit crazy, since we're getting excited for Marathon Monday on 4/19.

My Magic 'Fridge & One Week 'Til Boston Marathon!

ONE WEEK UNTIL THE BOSTON MARATHON. (ONNNEEEEE WWEEEKKKK!!!)

I mean, it’s not like I’m excited or anything. It’s not like I’ve stared at the training schedule on my refrigerator for months now. (Uh, I have.)

Actually, I thought I was the only one that did it. Until I stumbled across the blog of another runner/cancer warrior and realized I wasn’t alone. It’s true, folks. 1 week to go until the Boston Marathon, I am here to report that there ARE magical refrigerators out there everywhere. (I'm with you on that, Joe, and since imitation if the best form of flattery, I'm going to share about my fridge, too.)

Meet MY refrigerator that contains a magical binding contract for the upcoming 2010 Boston Marathon. After some help from my dear friend Colin (and adjustments to ensure I wasn’t as fast as a hare, but was just a bit faster than a turtle), my Boston Marathon training schedule was solidified months ago. In my world, that means only one thing…it gets printed on the fancy color laser printer…and then gets posted to my refrigerator.

This isn’t like a grocery list or “honey do” list that you adjust, remove, add, etc. This is THE list for THE Boston Marathon. It stands the test of time over the training months. There are days when I stand in front of it, tired or elated, burnt out or energized, compliant or argumentative. I’ll hug it, mock it, high-five it and argue with it. In the end, there are no negotiations. The refrigerator just sits there as my coach telling me to shut up, suck it up, lace up my shoes and head out the door. (Although, right now it’s telling me it’s TAPER TIME, so I’m in love with it…!) FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION.

For example, if it tells me to do an 8-mile Tempo Run? No matter how late I work or how tired I am, it is a “must do.” Rest day on the schedule (my favorite)? No running/no cross-training (No problem!).

This past season in prepping for Boston, we’ve had a lot of rain in SoCal. (Now, this is where the East Coasters smile and laugh at us West Coasters because it’s inevitable that the Boston Marathon will be cold or windy or raining or snowing…or all the above.) I’m not used to running in inclement weather, but on many Saturdays this training season when it’s been pouring outside (yes, in San Diego), my ‘fridge has told me to lace up my shoes and go run 16 miles in it --- tsunami warnings and all. And I did. (Thanks, Erin, for being a pal and running along coastal flats with me during those warnings to ensure that if I washed to sea, I’d at least have a buddy with me out there.)

To miss a day feels like I’m missing something important. I haven’t been perfect. Unfortunately, as I battle my way back to perfect health from my fight with cancer, it means there are some tough, health days….days when I want to run, but the doctor just shakes his head from side to side and says quietly, “not this week.” (But hey, I just passed my 6 month cancer-free check-up, so I can’t complain.)

Regardless, each day that gets highlighted takes me one day closer to the Boston Marathon. I love looking at how “yellow” my paper is turning, which also happens to be the color of the LIVESTRONG wristband. Seeing as I’m running the marathon on Team LIVESTRONG raising funds to benefit the Lance Armstrong Foundation, I’d say that’s pretty fitting.

Now that I’m writing all of this, I guess I lied. Neither my refrigerator nor my list is magic. The magic lies in my intent that every pounding mile I run in months of preparation, all the sweat/time/pain…every mile of that race…I WILL run to fight cancer. We WILL find a cure. It’s something much bigger than me, which is why my running buddies often hear me say, “When your feet get tired, run with your heart.”

In exactly 1 week from today, I’ll be crossing the finish line of THE Boston Marathon, the oldest internationally famous, marathon race. The best part is that I’ll be crossing that finish line with my fellow Team LIVESTRONG teammates. Every dollar raised and each day I cross off my training plan has been due to wonderful supporters like you. I appreciate all the support in kicking cancer to the curb, so that others don’t go through what me and so many of your loved ones had to face. Last year at this time I was fighting cancer...and now I'll be running cancer free. We have a lot to be thankful for this year, my friends.

So, I’m one week away with a few more miles to run this week, and I’m still short of my fundraising goal. For a $100 donation, I will run with a ribbon on my shirt in honor of/memory of someone you know battling cancer. However, every dollar counts, whether it's $1, $5 or $500! I'll be posting more in this last week about the angels that have sponsored miles in the race, my tracking bib number (so you can virtually cheer for my slow bootie) and the reasons that keep me running. For now, I need to stare at my refrigerator as it's mocking me because it's 9:45pm, and I have yet to run the 6 miles that it's calling out for today on the schedule. Ah man,...time to argue with the inanimate object (and I'll lose...and hit the gym tonight, I'm sure)...

The email for our Team LIVESTRONG for the Boston Marathon came out while I was on vacation...but it featured a note from someone you know -- ME!! lol. I wanted to share it with all of you. (See below after my blog note). :)

I am fundraising for the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) and running THE Boston Marathon (in 3 weeks!!). Last year, I ran it just days after treatment...and this year, I'm running it cancer-free. I couldn't have done it without all of you, so this year, I've decided to AUCTION OFF EACH MILE OF THE RACE to raise funds and run for all of YOU!

Dear Team LIVESTRONG Boston Marathon teammate,

This week I wanted to share with you the story one of your own teammates and three-time survivor, Julie Westcott. I had the pleasure of meeting Julie at last year’s Boston marathon and have gotten to know her over the past year. Besides considering her to be one of our star fundraisers, I am lucky to call her a friend. Here is Julie’s story in her own words:

I would love to say that I got involved with LIVESTRONG—but I have to say that LIVESTRONG got involved with me when I really needed them!

I was diagnosed with leukemia in 2006. I was 31 years old at the time. Since then, I've battled cancer a total of 3 times—and I have to say, "it's three strikes and you're outta here, cancer!" Each and every time, LIVESTRONG was there to offer a shoulder of support with incredible services during both my battle and survivorship.

While I feel there's no feasible way to ever "pay back" the immense support and encouragement I received, I found one incredible way to participate, and that was as a member of Team LIVESTRONG.

When my cancer came back last year, I felt defeated, but my two favorite Team LIVESTRONG staffers, Colleen Wilson and Sarah Appolito, challenged me to keep pushing through—and I joined Team LIVESTRONG for the Boston Marathon!

Why am I back on Team LIVESTRONG again this year? During the Tour de France, Lance Armstrong left a video message dedication where he said that although I was temporarily sidelined with cancer, I'd eventually be back to running marathons again soon. That day, I swore I'd fight my cancer with every fiber of my being and do an encore the following year. Well, I'm now cancer free, and a member of the Team LIVESTRONG Boston 2010 team!! (Thanks, Lance!)

I believe in the Mission of LIVESTRONG. I know first-hand that they change lives through every dollar donated in the fight against cancer. I won't stop running until there's a cure...and when my feet get tired, I'll run with my heart!

Eat Up Life with a Big Spoon

Someone said something to me today that made me stop. I mean, I was so dumbfounded by their words, I secretly wondered if I was on the same planet. I've decided since then that I *do* mentally live on a different one.

An individual told me that perhaps I kept getting cancer because I wasn't "getting the hint." (For the record, I'm cancer-free.) Wow. I mean, I admit, I do think there are some lessons to be learned and that although cancer itself isn't a "gift," the experience has taught me so much I am grateful to Eternity every day. This person proceeded to explain to me that perhaps I was meant to die, but just wasn't "getting the hint." Looking back on that conversation, I have to laugh. I mean - sheesh - if that's the case, between all the near-misses on the freeway commute, times I've dodged cars on my long marathon training runs and moments my klutzy nature has landed me in precarious situations -- I guess I'm wayyyy behind getting the hint.

Interestingly enough, I think I *have* gotten the "hint." Hearing that I had cancer the first time shocked me into a parallel universe. I can't explain how, but I know that in that instant, I knew I would die -- someday. (I mean, there is, after all, a 100% chance that living will kill a person.) The difference is that at the age of 31, I understood that every minute...every second...of every day mattered. It didn't matter if I spent it at work, having a glass of wine with a close friend or traveling the world --- it just mattered that in every waking second, I did my best to be happier and brighter in every moment and tried to give back.

Today, I'd like to pass on some comments from a TeamLIVESTRONG teammate that shared her experience, and they sum up how I feel, too:

"Cancer knows no age limit. It crosses all barriers and leaves devastation in its wake. However, I am not a victim. I am not a statistic. Today, I stand strong…against all odds. While cancer has spread and I am now medically described as "terminal," I feel more alive than ever. Oddly, cancer offers many "silver linings" if you are willing to search for them. Live and love every minute gifted. Live in the moment for today. I refuse to waste my cancer. I work hard to eat life with a big spoon and have so many goals for 2010. ...There is nothing like feeling alive and being a part of something bigger than you. - Michelle"

I love that. I love the comment about eating life with a big spoon, and we should all consider ourselves lucky to know cancer warriors like Michelle. I am grateful she shared her story on a day when, for a moment, I wondered what universe I lived in. In truth, it's clear that Michelle and I actually *do* live in a different world -- it's one many of you also live in (or you probably wouldn't be reading this blog) -- a world where possibilities are endless, and being grateful & living in the present is not only possible, but required. :)

It's here!! I admit it. I am a huge goober when it comes to the Olympics. As a cancer survivor and marathon runner, I know how tough training and trials can be in our lives. I think those of us that have crushed cancer, also tend to carry huge respect for these athletes as we can imagine how much focus, warrior training and mental strength it takes to not only get on the US Olympic Team, but to win the gold. I am very proud of all our athletes, have loved reading their posts on Twitter as they've pushed through their training, and I know look forward to seeing them ROCK the Olympic Games!! ROCK ON, Team USA! We are all cheering for you!

World Cancer Day

It’s World Cancer Day, and we're joining the team at LIVESTRONG to spread the word about the global cancer crisis and the simple things we can do to protect ourselves.

So here’s the message:

Know your risks. Call your doctor….What are you waiting for??!!

Learning about your family history and talking to a doctor about your daily habits can give you valuable insight into the steps you need to take, right now. It’s true – talking to your doctor about cancer can be scary, and many of us just forget to bring it up. But your health is important to me and that’s why I'm asking you to start the conversation now.

I'm a cancer survivor and know firsthand, as many of you do, that an early diagnosis is often the difference between life and death. It’s so simple, but everywhere I go I hear that people don’t learn about their risks or want to do that yearly check-up exam —because they're busy, because they’re scared or because they just forget. If you think you're "too busy" then think of the loved ones in your life, family and friends...and do it for them.

All of us can take some simple steps, like this one, to fight cancer. Prevention is one of those steps (and 40% of cancers are preventable!) For help in taking that first step, go to livestrong.com...I DARE YOU TO CALL YOUR DOCTOR and go for that yearly check-up:

Race to Save Lives! (TNT Summer Season is here!)

This picture was taken at the finish line of my first marathon, the 2008 Rock 'n' Roll San Diego Marathon. I started training for it 4 months after I received the last of my treatments for leukemia...all due to my friend and ultra runner...Mike Sheehy. He ran the 2007 one on my behalf while I was battling cancer as member of Team in Training (TNT) to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. He (along with my friends Joe & Judy) handed me a letter that day which dared me to get better and run the race with him the following year. And I did.

I did not train for that race alone. I ran with Team in Training, a freakishly AWESOME endurance program of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. (You can read some of my original training posts at the beginning of this blog in 2008.) This is my 5th season training with them (just completed my 3rd marathon in AZ). Guess what?! Our next season is starting...the super-galactic-super-awesome SUMMER SEASON of TNT!!!! (training for the San Diego and Seattle Rock 'n' Roll Half/Full Marathons)

Day 16/17: The "Why"

Waking up on today was strange. My brother just greeted me with “Good morning, Phoenix” as I met him for breakfast. I must say, my mind still has not grasped the magnitude of what the Cures Rock! Team accomplished.

I remember sitting in the San Diego Leukemia and Lymphoma Society office with just a PowerPoint presentation titled the “Cures Rock! (Ultra) Run – San Diego to Phoenix”. During the presentation, I nervously explained to Jenna, Heather and Bill about the objectives, the route, risks, and miscellaneous items. They sat there politely nodded. In the end the asked, “Can you really do this?” Honestly, I had no clue. And sitting in Phoenix today, I am still scratching my head wondering how we pulled it off. I am not a person who typically believes in miracles, but today I am starting to believe.

On Sunday, the Cures Rock! Team will finish our mission of running to Phoenix and covering more than 500 miles in 17 days. Along the way we shared our love with numerous families impacted by blood cancers. We brought our energy and love to them and left their homes filled with their words of encouragement, inspiration and even more love. The doctors, nurses and scientists showed us that our dollars are vital to the fight against cancer. And that their conviction to finding a cure is as strong as ours was during the Cures Rock! Tour. Even on Monday, I have plans to make one last stop to visit some nurses in Phoenix and drop of some requested chocolates before I turn West towards home.

We never missed an opportunity to spread the word of awareness. From numerous TV interviews in San Diego, Palm Springs and Phoenix to the many newspaper interviews, we always shared what we were doing, but we quickly moved onto the message that we need to all join the fight against cancer. The 5 / 10 Rule became our rallying cry. (Every five minutes someone in the US is diagnosed with a blood cancer and every ten someone losses their fight.) We blogged and twitted and even posted silly videos on YouTube. We made every effort to spread the word every way we could. Even writing our message in chalk along the road.
The dollars came in from all parts of the world. We received large donations from Connecticut and even a few dollars from a service station attendant. We received checks from people that found us in the middle of Highway 62 and even tonight we received an e-mail asking how can people donate. We still hold out hope that a cure will be found with one of our “lucky” dollars.
Some miles were harder than others. Some were much faster. We ate over 100 peanut butter sandwiches, over five pounds of pretzels, countless electrolyte drinks, 15 Myoplex drinks, and a few Michelob Ultras (don’t tell the nutritionist or coaches please). We used up three pairs of shoes, one roll of KT Tape, countless Band-Aids and even a little duct tape. There were close calls and near misses, and days it felt like we were alone on the highway. It was hot and cold. There were coyotes and cows. We saw some broken down trucks and some high end cars. Then there was Patrick, Mike the Original, and Mike on the Bike (I wish you all safe travels fellow journeymen).

In the end, we tried with all of our might. I do not regret a moment on this trip. Tomorrow, as I start out on the Rock ‘N’ Roll Arizona 50K with Bill M., Suz and Jen R, I will have a big grin on my face. From a PowerPoint a few months ago to a Sunday in January, I think we made a difference in the world somewhere. I won’t attempt to “Thank” individuals, but just a simple “I love you” to everyone that helped make this happen. You know who you are!!!

The “Live Life to the Ultra” moment can at the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training Inspiration dinner. As the Cures Rock! Team assembled for one last time, we were reminded why we made the journey. It was not the words of a world class marathoner or even the head of Competitor group that touched us. But it was the words of Kimberly Joy Costa. She gave us all ten rules to live by and I want to share them with you:

· Deal with life one day at a time.
· Turn every life experience into a learning experience
· Always look for the positive
· Try to do at least one new thing everyday
· Be true to yourself
· Touch as many lives as you can
· Enjoy the little things
· Don’t sweat the small stuff
· Hold on to your friends
· Make everyday count

Kimberly was only 19 years old when she lost her fight in 2000, but her words (shared by her father tonight) made us all reflect and take measure on what we just accomplished. We all sat and smiled, with tears, and knew Kimberly would be proud of the Cures Rock! Tour. Then Suz, our ever ready leader and friend, looked at me, wiped away the tears on her cheeks and said, “When we finish tomorrow, remind me to tell you the plan I have for us to do something bigger and better to beat cancer.”

Thank you Kimberly for the words…you made our night and reminded the Cures Rock! Tour of the “why”!

The song of the night is I Won’t Back Down by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The lyrics say it all. But the Cures Rock! Team will never back down to cancer. We will continue pushing the limits to show people how serious we are in this fight and we won’t stop until cancer is beat. Please join in the fight against cancer in your community and in your own unique way.

That is enough for now. Tomorrow is the celebration lap around Phoenix for the Cures Rock! Tour. Please don’t worry about our pace or the place we take. We are starting in the back of the pack to walk with the walkers, jog with the joggers and then run with the runners. We want to say “Thank You” to all the Team In Training members from all the chapters around the US that have inspired us along the way.

As for Jackson…well he has a busy day tomorrow and I put him to bed hours ago. Don’t tell him, but he is going to run the last .2 miles with me. He ran the first mile with me and it is only fitting that he joins me in the last one. Keep an eye out for us!

Day 15: Welcome to Phoenix!

Today was an amazing day! The Cures Rock! Team did so much today, and I will attempt to capture the feelings of the day. So please bear with me if I ramble.

We started the day very early. Up at 4:00 am, safety brief at 5:00 am and then running at 6:00 am. Greg, the Cures Rock! Team PR lead, started the day off with a strong and fun filled five miles. He lived in Arizona as a kid and really enjoyed having his first leg of the Cures Rock! Tour in his childhood town. He shared with me a bunch of historical facts and before we knew it the aid station was in front of us. After his leg, he had to rush off to the marathon expo to prepare for our interview with the Fox Morning Show.

Then Bill M. helped me through the next 12 miles of the run. After we finished his portion of the run, we had to quickly hurry over to the marathon expo for our interview. The Fox Morning Show interviewed both Julie and me. Julie did an outstanding job spreading the message of Cures Rock! and our goal to raise funds for blood cancer cure research.

My brother Steve guided me up East McDowell Road, where had a great view of Phoenix. We stopped at the summit for just a moment to enjoy the view and reflect on our journey. He then handed me off to Suz. She took me the last six miles to the convention center. Suz is really an amazing runner and passionate about Team In Training. She is also the only other person who participated in every day of the Cures Rock! Tour. She made sure the logistics of the run were conducted flawlessly. If you ever are planning to run across America, give her a call and she can tell you how your support needs to be executed for a successful trip.

When we headed to the entrance of the Rock N Roll Arizona Marathon Expo, Suz and I were greeted by a large crowd of supporters from all over. Colin and Heather had gathered up a large contingent of Team In Training runners to cheer us in the last few meters. There were so many friends there. Even the doctors from the Mayo Clinic we visited were there to greet us. It was truly amazing. I never expected something so wonderful….thanks Heather and Colin! (And yes, my brother Steve greeted me at the finish line with a beer.) It was an amazing journey and one that is not yet complete (we still have a 50K left on Sunday). Tomorrow, I have the opportunity to join TNT members in their marathon prep runs. And then we have the Pasta Party tomorrow night.

Thank you to everyone for all the kind messages and support over the past 15 days. We have some fun and rest tomorrow and then our last 50K on Sunday that will push us over 500 miles in total.

The “Live Life to the Ultra” moment can about 2 ½ hours after my finish at the Expo. The Cures Rock! Team went to the Banner Health Cardon Children’s Medical Center (in Mesa, AZ) for an amazing experience. We were treated to a celebration better than any celebration I have ever attended. There were so many children and families cheering for us when we walked in! Each and every one of them were telling us how great the Cures Rock! Tour was for accomplishing our mission! Seeing all these children was overwhelming. Here I am a runner being welcomed as a hero, by true cancer fighters! Everyday they fight! Everyday they make every effort to beat cancer! They are my inspiration!

We handed out gift bags to all the children and dropped of boxes of toys to fill their toy closet. The staff said the toys we dropped off will last them through the year! We also took a tour of the children’s facility, it is amazing. The staff at Cardon’s has done so much to make the facility a place for comfort and treatment. It is warm and definitely a place full love and care. The trip was incredible! Oh, Julie had me donate a pair of my running shoes to them for their trophy case. I was so touched, but I think they will need to be cleaned a few million times before they can go on display.

Then we took a trip over to the adult oncology floor. We had the chance to say “Thank You” to all the staff. The nurses up there were so much fun. They loved our stories. But I told them the Cures Rock! Tour had a goal to put all oncology nurses out of a job. If we help find a cure for cancer, then they all need to find a new career. Sorry ladies, you are amazing, but we really hate cancer! In the meantime, keep doing what you are doing…the families truly appreciate everything you do for them.

The song of the night is Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen. I know it has nothing to do with running is used at time like these. But I love the Boss and I am wicked tired. So I will request your forgiveness for the lack of creativity. After 15 days, I really think I was born to run…..for charity!

Day 14: Back in the Groove

OK….everyone delete the Day 13 blog from your computers, your memory and from existence.

Why? Because the Cures Rock! Team was back in action and moving quick today. The cavalry from Abbott arrived last night to help keep the pace strong. Robert and Tom showed up begging for big miles and looking to help the Cures Rock! Team succeed.

Today’s 33 miles were broken up into five mile segments with one lucky eight mile leg. The cavalry runners, Robert and Tom, took on the first ten miles. Tom asked a million questions about what I have been eating and drinking and how I came up with this insane idea. He shared with me the positive impact of this event is having the office (but everyone still thinks I am insane). Robert shared with me his adventures as a Walk Leader for the Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk. He and his family have completed 11, 3-Day Walks. Both of these guys held a strong pace and helped the first two legs slip away.

[Special thanks to Mike and all the employees at Golden Eagle Distributors. They heard I was coming through today, and they invited the Cures Rock! Team to set up an aid station, stop in, share some stories and take some photos. So if you are on the West Side of Phoenix and having a beer, thank Mike and the folks from Golden Eagle for getting that pint to you safe and sound. See you next time Mike…Cheers!]

Then the day only became crazier and groovier. Sally started dancing and singing and kept me laughing during her entire leg. If you don’t believe running with someone is a good idea, you are missing out. I have not worn an iPod the entire time. First, it is not really safe on the highways. Second, my running partners / pacers have been real saviors. The stories, the tales, the lies have all been entertaining. I recommend the next time you go for a run, take off the headphones and talk to your running partners. Trust me, it will be much more entertaining than listening to the same song for the millionth time.

Colin and I continued our debate on if he was the sexiest man alive. He agreed with me that he probably was the sexiest man alive, but takes himself out of the running to let the lesser-sexy Hollywood types win. I haven’t stopped laughing since Colin joined up with us in Parker, AZ. If you ever want to run fast and have fun, just join the San Diego North County Team In Training Team and ask to run with Colin. We have a fun time running fast together and giving each other a hard time. No wonder my mom really wants to adopt Colin.

My brother Steve, a retired Air Force Colonel, wore another cotton t-shirt (this one displaying the logo of the fighter squadron Grim Crows….I have no clue why a crow would be grim….but he can explain it to you in painful detail for five miles) and short shorts. I think he might have run in no socks! We almost have convinced him that dryfit shirts work and the gels are not just for astronauts anymore. But he is still not a believer. So if you see him at the Expo this weekend, please show him where the 2010 clothes are located. He will be the guy in his boat shoes and wearing his Bruce Springsteen “Born In the USA” concert t-shirt.

Finally, Suz had the luxury of running the last eight miles. Suz gets the last leg almost every day for a few reasons. One, she is able to watch my form and tell me if anything looks out of the norm. So I don’t do any harm to my body by getting sloppy. Two, she is able to share with me her thoughts on the day and any lessons learned. And three, she gets to tell me what I screwed up so I can fix it the next day. To prevent number three, I need to pick up the pace the last three miles. Unfortunately, she can motor, so she can run and share her thoughts on the day.

The “Live Life to the Ultra” moment today came after the run. The Cures Rock! Team went to the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale. We met with the oncology staff and handed out shirts and photos. But what really made the impact for me today was their passion for their profession. They talked about their obsession to find cures, to try new things and to keep pushing for results. Their passion was amazing! They appreciated our visit and really appreciated our entire mission, beyond the running. With our focus on awareness, health, finding funds for research, thanking the hospital staff and visiting families they said we are doing our part to ensure the success in fight against cancer. Another outstanding visit!

The song of the night is Trip Around the Sun by Jimmy Buffett. And it is dedicated to my brother Bill, better known to everyone as Boxer. He is one real bad dude. He and I served in the 75th Ranger Regiment together, we have climbed all sorts of peaks together, and we have even run with the bulls in Pamplona. He has always been there for me when I was struggling in life or when I had a crazy idea (like running to Phoenix). So I could have dedicated all sorts of crazy songs, but today is his birthday and I just wanted to tell him “Happy Birthday and thanks for being my big brother”! Rangers Lead the Way!

Day 13: The Six Musketeers

We knew it was coming. You knew it was coming. Everyone knew it was coming. But no one really knew when. Well it was today…today was “that day”. “That day," the one that tests a team. “That day” that asks you, “How much do you want this?” It was “that day." For many runners it is “that mile," but for the Cures Rock! Team it is “that day."

We knew the day was going to be a tough one when my mother informed us she was not feeling well and was going to have to stay behind. During Suz’s safety brief you could see the wear and tear of the previous 12 days. The team was not their usual rowdy or silly bunch. On the convoy to the start line, our lead vehicle was caught in a camera speed trap (sorry, Aimee, I will pay for the ticket). Then the start line was at the base of a hill that provided seven miles of long, grinding fun.

During the first five miles, my right Achilles decided it was tired of my left one getting all the love and attention, and it decided to flare up and begin to swell. My right knee has also been a burden for the last few days so I was just not in the mood to deal with my right Achilles. So the team had to do emergency “wheel” repair in about ten minutes. A little K-Tape, and little massage and back on my feet. The next ten miles with Colin were nothing but trying to loosen up and shake off the first five miles.

When we arrived in Tonopah, AZ, I was done for. Sitting on the bed of the truck, I just stared at the ground wishing the wind would die down, the sun would just break through the clouds and the pain in my joints would just go away. (Humorous note: Colin recommended he “pee” on my ankle to make it feel better. He said, if it works for jelly fish it might work my issue. If we had a quote of the tour contest, this might be the winner by a landslide.) But Suz, told me to get up and keep moving.

Then I had a huge mental mistake. Before each leg Suz or Steve tells me the distance of the next leg, a quick course description and any landmarks. What I heard and what they told me were two different things. I thought the aid station and a landmark were only .5 miles apart, when in reality they were 1.5 miles apart. When I passed the landmark and saw no aid station, I began to hear that voice of doubt. That evil voice that creeps into every runner’s head and tells you to “stop." I mentally began to break. Sally then just ran next to me telling me my pace, “8:40….8:45….8:40," trying to keep me moving.

At last, I was three miles from the finish for the day. Just three miles, but it seemed like it was going to be another 30. I was done. Colin then gathered the team together for one final moment before taking on the last few miles. I pulled out his Nokia phone and read a quick message. He read, “Cures Rock! Team, this is Red. You met me on Day 1 of your run. I just wanted to let you know I am having my port removed tomorrow, meaning I am almost done with all my treatments. Thank you for the visit. And remember to keep running.”

At that moment, the Five Musketeers (Sally, Suz, Colin, Steve and I), who endured a day that made every effort to break us, added one more Musketeer…Red. So “Thank You” Red for being there for us when we needed that extra push. You are an inspiration to all of us. I am glad to have a friend like you and am glad to hear you are doing so well.

As the sun set on Day 13….well, the Cures Rock! Tour is still on track. Our mettle was tested and we were victorious. Onto Day 14….and no speeding tickets I hope.

The “Live Life to the Ultra” moment today was the message from Red. Nothing more to say, than you don’t know where you will get that gentle push forward. For me it came from the simple words from a five year old.

The song of the night is Willin by Little Feat. It references Tonopah, which was a place I just had to visit. When I did my first map reconnaissance I saw Tonopah, AZ on the map and said, “I have to run through there.” Well, I did that today! The song is dedicated to the Six Musketeers who made Day 13 one to remember.
